New Year, New Board

I like to set New Year’s resolutions for myself each year. I have learned not to set my expectations too high because it typically spells failure before the end of February. Instead, I tend to improve upon things I’m already doing, which ensures the resolution always will be on my mind. Usually at least a couple of my resolutions relate to my professional life, and 2011 is no different.

When I began as editor of Qualified Remodeler in September 2010, the magazine conducted a reader survey designed to help us better understand what readers find valuable in QR and what they’d like to see the magazine address more regularly. As I read the respondents’ comments, I realized having a group of trusted advisors would better help me meet the readers’ requests. Therefore, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to create a well-rounded editorial advisory board, which will guide QR to sources and topics important to you. I would like to introduce you to the first three members of the board, all of whom are remodelers active in industry organizations:

Michael Nagel, CGR, CAPS, is a partner in MAW Chicago LLC, Palatine, Ill. He is a National Association of Home Builders’ BuildPAC trustee and recently was installed as president of the Illinois Home Builders Association. Nagel is active in legislative affairs and currently is penning an article for the March issue about what NAHB will be lobbying for in 2011.

Scott Sevon, CGR, CAPS, GMB, CGP, GMR, also is a partner in MAW Chicago, Palatine. He serves on several Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago committees and is involved with the NAHB Remodelers. Sevon is a 2010 NAHB life director and an NAHB BuildPAC trustee.

Donna Shirey, CGR, CAPS, CGP, is president of Shirey Contracting Inc., Issaquah, Wash. She has more than 30 years of industry experience and is committed to environmentally responsible building practices, as seen in her firm’s recently completed Zero Energy Idea House. Shirey was 2010 NAHBR chair and has held several leadership positions on NAHB’s committees.

Each of these advisors has many more credentials—too many for me to list here. You’ll be better introduced to them as you read their contributions to the magazine and Web site. Not only will Nagel, Sevon and Shirey share technical information and business tips from their own experience, but they also have offered to be a resource for you by answering your questions via QRboard@cygnusb2b.com.

In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about them, visit QualifiedRemodeler.com where we have created an editorial advisory board page that features a Q&A with each of the advisors. The questions range from professional to personal; I think you’ll get a chuckle from some of their answers.

Although the editorial advisory board is my New Year’s resolution, ultimately, the members are here to help you. Please tap into their collective genius and let all of us know how we can help you achieve a very successful 2011.
