Chermak Construction, Edmonds, Wash., Chermak.com
This Asian-inspired cabinet provides two purposes for the homeowner: It adds built-in storage in the existing dining room and creates access steps to a new meditative loft space above the room. The cabinets were designed to emulate traditional Japanese tansu furniture, which incorporates function, craftsmanship and aesthetics, while serving as a façade to hide the stairway.
The cabinets and stairs are made of furniture-grade maple. Tansu cabinet hardware was used to enhance the Asian-inspired aesthetic. Trim work utilizes maple and fir. Total cost for this project, including materials and labor, was $15,000.
