Gold Winner: Chermak Construction, Inc., Edmonds, Wash.
Project location: Seattle, Wash.
Sq. ft. before: 120
Sq. ft. after: 120
Project cost: $45,000
The existing kitchen footprint was approximately 120 sq. ft. and the size would remain unchanged. The owner’s desire was to add “size” without additional square footage.
Other items on the homeowner’s wish list included: updating plumbing and electrical; modernizing appliances; finishes in keeping with the Craftsman style but which would also satisfy the owner’s love of the Asian-inspired aesthetic; improved layout and circulation; and more natural light.
The ceiling was reframed to create a barrel-vaulted ceiling that added drama and perceived height to the kitchen, accentuating the lighting and adding to the space without adding to square footage.
Rearranging the major appliances provided an improved work triangle and improved circulation and access to other rooms.
The addition of a small casement window facing the back of the house added significant natural light to the kitchen. New lighting (all surface mounts, no cans) was selected to add visual appeal as well as provide light that is warm and not harsh.
