The exterior objectives for Coupard Architects & Builders of Falls Church, Va. on this whole house remodel were to replace the existing elevated approach from the street and create a bolder, more recognizable entry sequence and replace existing cedar shake shingles that are mandated by the neighborhood with imitation shakes that better suit the shallow slope. Inside the home, the team needed to enlarge the entry foyer to improve sense of arrival and give one more space before immediately encountering stairs up or down from the split foyer. The group also needed to renovate the cramped, outdated kitchen and create a stronger connection to adjacent rooms which were also to be updated.

Referred to as a “wonderfully simple entrance and walkway” by one judge, a new entry sequence was crafted to embrace the wooded landscape and utilized rough structural cedar posts for their appearance and resilience to insects and moisture. The decision to angle one side of the structural posts served as a way to achieve a comfortably scaled walkway while referencing the surrounding wooded landscape.

With this organically inspired wood structure in place to set the rhythm for the entry sequence, the structural elements were lightly linked together with stainless steel cables and metal tube handrails. The slight tilt of the cedar posts, combined with the relative transparency of the railings, heightens the experience of approaching the house by bridge.

With limited space to expand the footprint of the kitchen, a more effective organization had to be achieved. Reorienting the cooktop allowed the kitchen to open to the adjacent family room while cherry cabinetry became the anchoring element of the kitchen. Glass door wall cabinets align with new front windows and a random arrangement of backsplash tiles dance between cabinets and dark stone countertops.
