Focus on What You Can Control

The remodeling industry is persevering compared to new housing, which, to say the least, has been limping along for the past few years. However, there’s no doubt that many of you have been challenged to re-evaluate your approach given this period in our country’s economic history — employment is down, discretionary spending is down, home equity is down, and home values are down. You get the idea; there are plenty of things to be down about.

However, we regularly talk to remodelers who are making it happen. Those who are succeeding have set realistic goals and have made a conscious decision to focus on what they can control and to not worry about the rest. Here are a few things that you can control:

  • Customer service
  • Attention to detail
  • Jobsite cleanliness
  • Marketing
  • Connecting with past customers
  • Thanking those past clients for referrals
  • Perusing new revenue streams
  • Networking
  • Creative and functional design

Am I over-simplifying things? Perhaps, but consider this: My neighbor recently told me he was contemplating a full-scale kitchen remodel and asked if I had any good remodeler recommendations.

One of Qualified Remodeler’s readers and friend of the magazine, Scott Sevon, GMR, GMB, CGP, CGR, CAPS, immediately came to mind. This particular remodeler has done many seemingly small things for us as a magazine over the years. He has made himself available for interviews, taken us on home tours, stopped by at trade shows and offered his expertise to answer questions. The list goes on.

Similarly, in his dealings with clients, Scott has made a point to focus on all the little things he can control, and the net result is his business is flourishing.

Now let’s fast forward to last week when I received a call from Scott, genuinely thanking me for the referral which actually lead to the job. His thank-you call was yet another example of the little things Scott does that add up to establish him as the consummate professional that he is.
