2009 NKBA Design Competition Category: Medium Kitchens (35 – 50 sq. ft. of countertops)

For Jennifer Gilmer, CKD, of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath, Ltd., maximizing an outdoor view while maintaining a warm environment was key. She selected Asian-style cabinets with a sculpted door, using Premier Walnut cabinetry with an Antique Cherry finish and Wood-Mode maple cabinetry for the wet bar. A custom-made 72"-round butcher-block table and built-in booth seating attached to the island maximize space, while Valley Gold Marble countertops add style. Sub-Zero drawers, a Miele dishwasher and Wolf microwave/convection oven finish the space.

Inspired by École des Beaux Arts, a collection of influential art schools in France, this sculpted kitchen space is all about symmetry. Designed by Friedemann Weinhardt of Design First Kitchen Interiors, this space features a Chinese wedding cabinet, along with marble countertops that harmonize with the custom crafted mosaic island top and limestone flooring. Cabinetry includes SieMatic Magnolia White, Dark Maple and Amaranth Green, as well as Artcraft Dark Maple; appliances include a Miele dishwasher and oven, Wolf range and Sub-Zero refrigerator.

Too many cooks may spoil the broth, but for designer Richard Farrell of Binns Kitchen + Bath Design, a four-cook kitchen was a challenge to be relished. Simplicity was the way to go, so Farrell used clean-lined SieMatic elm cabinetry and created a wall of stainless steel appliances. The island is topped with Silestone Grey Amazon quartz countertops, and features pull-out spice storage and a recycling center. Two pantries with sliding doors and deep drawers solved storage issues, while a Liebherr French door refrigerator provides storage. Miele appliances suit the needs of the various cooks.

Designer Diane Foreman, CKD, CBD was asked to give some wow-power to this 1940s-era home kitchen – without a wow-style budget. In conjunction with Jamie Rupprecht, AKBD, of Neil Kelly Company, she decided to create drama through a rich color palette, including rich espresso and warm brandy stains on cherry cabinets by Décor, Verde Typhoon Granite and Wilsonart Monterey Storm laminate countertops and porcelain tile with a random patterned glass mosaic backsplash. Added function comes from the KitchenAid dishwasher, Dacor oven and Best by Broan ventilation.
