The project began originally as an exterior face-lift project. The home, only 5 years old at the time, underwent a transformation from a typical tract-style home to a more classical Spanish exterior. The new theme was a welcome alteration to the community.
Five years later, the homeowner wanted a simple room addition but was concerned with balance and proportion and didn’t want to jeopardize the aesthetics of their original renovation. The objective was to create much needed space and develop a more private entry area.
The challenge for Ross Design Group of Orlando, Fla., was to place the new addition within a tight setback created by a curved front lot and create a balanced blend of the old and new. The added areas also had to comply with strict floor area ratios and strict site coverage regulations.
An existing, seldom used living room was transformed into a new bath and master closet extension. The room addition consisted of a guest suite/piano studio with adjoining bath. A more welcoming courtyard included a sitting area with central fountain and spectacular views from the new addition.
Several architectural features were salvaged and reused, including the precast column and wrought iron detail, which was used at a window on the home’s rear elevation.
