Adeteriorating lakefront rambler was transformed into an elegant home by this project. The home is beautifully set atop a bluff overlooking a gorgeous lake. When the client came across the home, they found themselves drawn to the potential and the marvelous views.
They knew what they wanted: a well-designed living space to make the 1,000-sq.-ft home seem larger than life, a first floor laundry and plenty of storage. Completing the task was tricky because the home is situated close to the road and expanding outward was not an option.
Knowing the home had potential and utilizing the not-so-big-house approach to better utilize the square footage, South Face Creative of Eden Prairie, Minn., began a plan that took the cramped closed-off home and made it into a dream lake home, complete with updated amenities, a lake view from almost every window, and a floor plan that was as wide open as the lake itself.
A number of problem areas existed, including 1970s paneling, indoor/outdoor carpet, ancient appliances, rotted flooring, exposed insulation and dated slider windows. The rotting porch needed to be removed, the drainage system rerouted and rotted ceiling joists replaced along with all of the electrical wiring.
The floor plan was radically altered. Previously, the bedrooms faced the lake, with the family living space and entry to the home on the street side. The bedrooms were moved to the street side, while a large open family room combined with a kitchen and dining room filled the lake side area.
By removing walls and opening up the space, there was room for the first floor laundry that the owners desired. Creating separate living spaces — bedrooms and baths off toward the back and living and dining rooms upfront — offered the family a way to retreat and entertain. The entrance to the home was also relocated from the street side to the lake side.
The outside of the home features elements of Cape Cod design, and while not completely transformed, these touches include carriage style garage doors, wide window boxes, shutters and a deep gray hue. A wide paved patio opens the yard for entertaining.
“Project details and solutions are excellent,” says one of the judges.
