New standards proposed for composite wood panels

Legislator introduces standards legislation that would regulate formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels. The AFPA supports the initiative as well as sustainable building materials.

WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association issued the following statement last week from President and CEO Donna Harman in support of legislation introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) to create a new nationwide standard for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels based on California’s existing standard.

“AF&PA supports creating a single, nationwide standard for formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panel products. The leadership from Sen. Klobuchar and Sen. Crapo on this issue is welcome and appreciated.

“Using California’s existing technology-based standard as a basis for this legislation’s new national standard is a good approach that promotes green jobs and product stewardship. It also helps level the playing field for manufacturers by ensuring that those who are willing to meet rigorous standards do not also face a competitive disadvantage.

“AF&PA looks forward to continuing to work with the broad coalition that has supported this legislation—a coalition that has included environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and other wood products trade associations—in order to see this bill signed into law.”
