Project name: Custom Lower Level
Project location: Delafield, Wis.
The lower level of this custom home was designed to be an entertainment haven. The owners wanted the main focus to be on the bar/theater area. This space has a sitting area and an expansive bar that is open to the theater. Other areas include a temperature-controlled wine closet that leads to a card room, a playroom for the children, a sauna, lap pool, exercise room, motorcycle room and a gallery that leads to guest quarters. The back of the home provides access to the outside patios and pool from a variety of rooms in the lower level. Because of the amount of different rooms for different activities, the main challenge was getting each room to flow into the next from a traffic and design perspective.
Another challenge was controlling the different temperature requirements for the lap pool, exercise room, wine closet and main entertainment areas. Keeping the humidity of the lap pool area contained is crucial to protecting the elegant wood and paints from damage. The walnut wood floors continue from the gallery on one side of the lower level through the bar, living room and to the pool area. Different heating and cooling units on individual thermostats ensure proper temperatures. Solid, sealed doors help maintain temperature and humidity.
