Project name: The Bridge House
Project location: Landrum, S.C.
Square footage: 5,050
This kitchen was conceived of as a place for gathering. The focal point of the space is a u-shaped island that serves as the command center for meal preparation, while also serving as a sit-at space for guests. An adjacent dining room provides a seamless connection using an open, airy feel. Clean lines and minimalist details allow a focus on contrasting materials of warm cherry floors and cabinets with a frosted glass countertop, and stainless steel hardware and trim.
Challenges included: 1) Clients’ direction to design a home characterized by unexpected discoveries and uncommon features; 2) A site condition in which the steep slope of grade fell in a direction perpendicular to the best direction of view. The linear arrangement of rooms along an axis parallel to the view afforded a maximum number of rooms to enjoy the view.
