The Southern Pine Council (SPC) recently presented its 2008 Long-Sullivan Award to Chuck Ferguson, president of Meridian Company in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Formed 15 years ago, Meridian Company is a design/build general contractor and developer, handling primarily residential structures plus some commercial projects. The company has built numerous projects using Southern Pine, many incorporating inventive building and design techniques. For the Mariners Watch development in Beaufort, Meridian used Southern Pine beams to support cantilevered second-story decks over the common swimming pool. The project not only depended on the strength of Southern Pine, but also involved innovative engineering and connections.
“I’m honored to receive this award,” Mr. Ferguson said. “I depend on the performance and beauty of Southern Pine materials, produced right here in South Carolina, to enhance our projects whenever possible.”
Each year, a committee of Southern Pine Council members selects a building or design professional who has demonstrated outstanding use of Southern Pine products to be honored with the Long-Sullivan Award. The award is named for two early 20th century marketing pioneers of the Southern Pine lumber industry – Robert A. Long and W.H. Sullivan.
