CSI features webinar on code compliance

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (October 6, 2008) – The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) announced that it will feature a webinar hosted by David Conover, senior advisor with the International Code Council (ICC), titled "Automated Code Checking of BIMs in an e-Government Environment," December 16 at 2 p.m. EST.

Conover is leading ICC's efforts to automate the code compliance process and capture interoperability opportunities by putting codes into a "smart" format. During the webinar, Conover will discuss how initiatives such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) will change the design, construction and approval of buildings with respect to building codes, standards and regulations.

"CSI is continually adding new programs to our webinar series at the request of our members, and this program will be particularly useful as ICC has a great deal of expertise to share," said CSI Executive Director and CEO Walter Marlowe. "Through an agreement with ICC, we'll offer this webinar free-of-charge to ICC members."

The webinar will:

  • Describe how BIM and interoperability provide the foundation for the building industry to collaborate, and the key role of architects
  • Explain a new design and approval process for buildings based on interoperability
  • Conduct automatic code checking and help other design team members integrate their work into the project
  • Cover how BIM and automatic code checking can be used with an e-government setting to facilitate plan review and approval

CSI's involvement in the development of BIM is growing. Earlier this year, CSI launched an AudioCast series called "bimWITS" in conjunction with the buildingSMART alliance™ (hear it at http://audio.csinet.org). CSI is also organizing a BIM practice group (join it at www.csinet.org/joinbim).

"CSI and its members have been at the forefront of the BIM effort and this is a great opportunity for ICC and CSI to work together," said Conover. "I encourage ICC members to listen in."
