2008 NKBA Design Competition Category 1 Conversion is the Word Among Small Kitchen Competition Finalists Small Kitchens (less than 35 sq. ft. of countertops)

Designed to provide seating and countertop space for two while avoiding a “lunch counter” feel, this kitchen remodel, designed by Tony Hunt, CKD, CBD of Pickering, Ontario, Canada-based Binns Kitchen + Bath Design, offers a wealth of natural light, a variety of materials and a functional island. The design, planned around the perimeter windows, blends an earthy palette highlighting the contrasts of the light floor tile against the dark granite countertops and rich cabinetry from ArtCraft Kitchens. The kitchen includes a range from Wolf Appliances and a Miele dishwasher.

Designed by Areti Tanya Rentzos of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada-based Andros Kitchen & Bath Designs, this 1920s kitchen is now a modern masterpiece. Rentzos chose maple wood cabinetry with a warm Merlot stain and wood dovetail drawer systems from Acorn Kitchens for the project. Silestone by Cosentino countertops top the workstation and seating areas, and various elevations allow a visual separation between the kitchen and living area. The designer also specified KitchenAid appliances, a sink from Blanco America and faucet from Hansgrohe.

To update a bungalow kitchen, Catherine Heir and Kaye Hathaway of dea design group, ltd. in Round Lake, IL, created a flow between rooms while fitting in storage and seating for the family. The designers selected Decor wall cabinetry for practical storage and a lighted display area, paired with natural quartz countertops from Cambria. To overcome the challenge of fitting in an island, the pair included a small island with an open wall to the dining room, establishing room for a breakfast bar. The redesign also has appliances from KitchenAid, Bosch and Dacor, among others.

“The client’s goal here was to create a kitchen that would endure as an elegant backdrop for herself and her guests,” says Charles A. Ward, CKD, of Omaha, NE-based Ward’s Kitchens & Baths, Inc. With co-designer Lisa Anderson, CKD, ASID, Ward created a display space for contemporary art pieces, and organized areas amid the contemporary cabinetry from The Grabill Cabinet Co., topped with black granite and glass countertops. Appliances from Thermador, GE and Best by Broan, as well as Kohler Co. faucetry and Hafele America Co. hardware, complete the look.
