2008 NKBA Design Competition Category 7 Maximizing Space and Materials Gives Large Baths Super-Sized Appeal Large Bathrooms (more than 55 sq. ft.)

A sense of warmth and elegance creates a lasting impression in this bath designed by Siri Evju, CKD, CBD, of Siri Designs in Portland, OR. It features, among other things, a waterfall that runs down the sandstone-tiled wall into a bed of pebbles. A Mica ledgestone half wall separates the Aquatic Industries tub from the large Finer Cabinetry double vanity. Another interesting design element is the concrete countertops from Cement Elegance, with real-leaf imprints in the concrete backsplash. A drying-off area is created by a quartzite boulder growing out of the floor and the privacy wall. A large shower/steam room includes a rainshower from Grohe USA, while the design is completed by a Toto USA toilet, a sink from Kohler Co. and Brizo faucets.

Most people go to the spa for a makeover, but Donna L.A. Riddell, CKD, CBD, of Victoria, BC, Canada-based Artistry Design Group, Ltd., gave this small ensuite a makeover of its own. A glass-enclosed shower – complete with a Corian shower pan and finished in subway tiles, tempered glass and a Carrera marble transition – features conventional, rainhead and handheld showerheads from Jado Bathroom & Hardware and Hansgrohe. The space also includes an Eclipse jetted spa from BainUltra and a sink from Kohler Co., along with vapor-proof recessed light fixtures in the shower.

Created by Blue Arnold, CKD, CBD, this bath encompasses modern luxury in a spa-like environment. Arnold, of Jarrettsville, MD-based Kitchens by Request, Inc., worked with Lance Arnold and Julie Krause and selected an oval hydrotherapy tub from Kohler Co., as well as an open entry, clear glass wall shower from Hansgrohe with satin nickel, Terrano Series fixtures. The design is completed by custom cherry vanities that float against South American slate walls, as well as Yorkshire countertops from Cambria Natural Quartz Surfaces.

For Tracey Scalzo, CKD, CBD, of Sarasota, FL-based Eurotech Cabinetry, Inc., the key to this bath was maximizing space. Working with co-designer Anne Folsom Smith of Anne Folsom Smith Interior Design, Scalzo created separate shower and water closet spaces for privacy, with a shared vanity/tub area that acts as a dressing space. A BainUltra tub and decorative pilasters surrounding mirrored panels create an elegant look. A tall cabinet from Dutch Made provides added storage. Tying into the look are Breccia Oniciata marble countertops and Crema golden marble flooring.
