2008 NKBA Design Competition Category 9 Efficient Use of Materials Puts the ‘Show’ in Showroom Designs Showrooms

Designed by Cheryl Hamilton-Gray, CKD, of Carlsbad, CA-based Hamilton-Gray Design, Inc., this showroom mixes a Euro-influenced design theme with “non-professional” built-in appliances. A demonstration area features curved seating, with a variety of cooktops placed to facilitate the chef’s interaction with customers. White lacquered cabinets from Scavolini contrast with the charcoal work tops from Eurostone and Pyrolave. This space is enhanced by an oven and microwave from Wolf Appliances, a sink from Kindred USA, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and Walker Zanger Roku glass tile.

Francis V. Garofoli, CKD and Jodi T. Osborn, AKBD ,of West Boylston, MA-based Kitchens by Design, Inc. created this imaginative showroom kitchen to showcase a wide variety of materials. Garofoli made good use of the small space, combining changing depths and heights to add texture. Quality Custom Cabinetry and double-layered Rainforest Green granite countertops help to create an inviting, subdued palette. The look is complemented by a backsplash with embossed subway tile, a sink from Franke Consumer Products – featuring a Hansgrohe pull-out spray faucet – a coffered ceiling glazed and detailed by Holly McCarthy, as well as a Nesco chandelier.

This kitchen display needed an updated look without sacrificing function. Areti Tanya Rentzos of Andros Kitchen & Bath Designs in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, addressed the challenge by adding warm, contemporary elements. A walnut island contrasts with the painted white maple cabinetry with brown glazing, while the backsplash features Creme Marfil and Thassos marble. A Viking Range refrigerator, Dacor microwave and Miele cooktop complement the Acorn Kitchens and ArtCraft cabinetry. Calcutta Saputo honed marble and Corian countertops finish off the look.

For Gail Drury, CMKBD, the difference is in the details. This was certainly the case when Drury, along with co-designer Meghan Rebman, set out to design this intricate showroom display, which includes plenty of decorative detailing, as well as a working bar to facilitate showroom events. Drury, of Glen Ellyn, IL-based Drury Design Kitchen & Bath, incorporated Spring Cloud polished marble countertops, an integrated Mariana honed soapstone apron sink and cabinetry from Ovation Cabinetry. The Thermador refrigerator is built in behind antique glass doors with the wood mullion detail applied, and appliances from Dacor and Miele add high-end appeal.
