Aging-in-place has increasingly become a goal of many active matures in the U.S. The owners of this home, hoped to realize that result by adding a first-floor master suite to a wonderful Mission-style home, which over the years had become cramped, dark and dated. Additionally, the owners envisioned a new life in their home with a much closer connection to the outdoors.
The remodeler, Hartman Baldwin Inc., incorporated the entire property into its resulting program for the home. First, they created a covered arcade (complete with archways) to link the existing home with the existing garage. The new addition occupies the space to the rear of the arcade. The room announces itself with broad steps and a large set of windows that open onto a newly created walled-in garden in front of the arcade.
Infusing plenty of natural light was a key objective for the clients. The designers brought in light from all angles. Skylights were placed above the master bath, a sitting room as well as the master bedroom.
An adjacent space linking the new garden with the existing home would have proved awkward if not for the creation of a walled patio that opens from the existing dining room. The patio space is distinctively its own space through the inclusion of very authentic trellis work constructed above the patio.
The authentic Mission style of each of the exterior and interior detail elements helps make the sum of all the parts quite harmonious.
