Buyers' Guide 2006: Exteriors

MonierLifetile’s Madera concrete roof tile is modeled after hand-split cedar shakes. It has a Class A fire rating and is designed to be durable in extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, snow, hail and blizzards. Its available in autumnwood, mountainwood, sagewood and a new color, vintagewood.

Owens Corning’s Woodcrest and Woodmoor Collection shingles offer the appearance of wood shake with a Class A fire rating. It’s ideal for low-slope roofs popular in Western architecture and steep slopes of traditional homes. The collection is offered in seven colors: timber, granite, sycamore, chestnut, red rock, mesquite and carbon.

Elk Corporation introduces its first colored asphalt shingle, the Cool Color Series. This series offers energy-efficient asphalt shingles in a choice of earth-toned colors. Not only are the shingles offered in more colors than white, they also include more high reflective granules potentially lowering the energy needed to cool a home.

H & L Industries include four H & L Half-Log sizes (10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-in. diameters). Four corner systems are now available: Round Post; Saddle-Notch; Butt and Pass; and Square Timber. Many additional products, accessories and options are available to enable customers to transform new or existing buildings into appealing, energy-efficient log structures.

EcoStar introduces its Majestic Slate Traditional tiles as part of its environmentally-friendly line of products. It is a rubber slate tile that is made of recycled industrial rubber and plastic. The tile features a rectangular profile and is offered in nine colors: stone red, earth green, chestnut brown, cedar brown, mountain plum, smoke gray, federal gray, midnight gray and black.

Crane Performance Siding offers the Premium Pointe Soffit. This product has added thickness for increased rigidity and strength, designed for long runs and porch ceilings. It is available in solid and concealed vented styles including a wide selection of colors.

CertainTeed offers its Landmark TL IR, a tri-laminate, shake-style roofing shingle with impact resistance. Engineered with a tough fiberglass scrim on its back surface for increased durability, it is tested to withstand the impact of a 2-in. steel ball dropped from a height of 20 ft., without cracking.

Tamko Roofing Products adds Lamarite Shake composite shingles to its line of Lamarite composite shingles. These shingles offer the same aesthetics of shake without the maintenance and safety issues of real wood. It is made with an authentic grain patter in 5-, 7- and 12-in. widths.

The IcePro System from Green Mountain Innovations, Inc. is an inflatable sleeve that attaches over the lower 30 in. of the roof edge where ice dams/icicles form. When the system is activated, outdoor air is drawn in and inflates the sleeve which breaks the ice loose causing it to slide off the roof in a controlled manner.

Custom-Bilt Metals’ Metal Shingles offer wind-resistance against hurricane-force winds. In this system the metal roofing panels lock together securely on four sides. These shingles are also fire-resistant as well as lightweight and energy efficient.

Wellington Polymer Technology Inc. features Enviroshake, its roofing product derived from 95 percent recycled materials. It is composed of post-industrial plastics, fiber (flax, wood, hemp) and crumb rubber from tires and is designed to replicate the look of taper-split cedar.

Versatex Trimboards introduces its Stealth Trim System, containing grooves that will accept any siding product for corners and window surround. The system corner board is easy to install because it eliminates the need for two 5/4-in. pieces of material or a J-Channel when used with vinyl siding, thanks to a rigid one-piece corner.

MiraTEC trim from CMI features a clear, cedar texture on one side and a contemporary, smooth finish on the other. It looks and handles like wood, and offers the durability and long-term performance benefits of PVC. The combination of funtionality and beauty makes MiraTEC ideal for a wide range of non-structural exterior trim applications.

DECRA Roofing Systems offers its DECRA Tile, a lightweight alternative to traditional tile products. It is composed of lightweight zinc/aluminum alloy coated steel and coated with an acrylic bonded stone chip finish. It is walkable, low maintenance and won’t crack, burn, curl, split or rot.

Accent Millworks introduces its line of long-lasting and maintenance-free Cellular PVC Cupolas. They are resistant to severe weather including moisture, salty environments, intense sunlight and corrosive substances and don’t rot, cup, split, twist, warp or crack.

IKO presents the Crowne Slate Extra Advantage size shingle with additional unique side lap. Along with a special head and side lap, the larger design of Crowne Slate shingles makes for quicker installation and comes in three colors: Greystone Jade, Regal Stone and Royal Granite.

ShutterLand offers Exterior Shutters, unfinished cedar panels ready for painting or staining. Each shutter panel is made from manufacturing standards using glued and doweled construction. Shutters come in two styles: Style S is 1 1/4-in. wide and Style W comes 1 3/4-in. wide. Both are fixed louver styles.

Fypon Cellular PVC Trim can replace wood in nearly any nonload bearing application and can be cut and shaped with standard woodworking tools. Cellular PVC Trim is available in wood grain and smooth styles, and is sold in boards or sheets. Beaded Board and Corner Board profiles are also available.

James Hardie’s HardiShingle line combines the charm of shingle-style home exteriors with the ease of installation and affordability of lap siding. Available in 12-ft. lengths the HardiShingle line includes Straight Edge, Staggered Edge, Half-Round Notched and Individual Shingles in a variety of colors.

Crafted from solid white cellular PVC, Great Mouldings from Advanced Trimworks have the look and feel of wood, and install like wood. The line is comprised of 15 exterior mouldings in popular profiles and sizes, including: band; base; window drip cap; two bed; three styles of crown; brick mould; cove; window sill; Nantucket fence cap; a new water table drip cap; two dentil; and more. All are available in 16-ft. lengths with the exception of the dentil moldings that come in 8- and 10-ft. lengths.

NextStone’s complete siding component system contains a variety of panels and accessories for exterior siding. These panels interlock or insert with other NextStone accessories as well as common vinyl or metal siding J-channels, corners, etc. and are 48 by 15 1/2 in. NextStone panels are available in tri-buff, tri-gray, tri-sedona, desertbuff, gray and buff.

ArmorLite Roofing’s ArmorLite Slate is a lightweight roofing material that contains an inter-locking system to simplify installation. The ArmorLite Slate is made of weatherable polymer that keeps the color and is Class A fire rated.

Follansbee’s KlassicKolors is a prepainted Terne II zinc/tin- coated roofing sheet offered in an extensive palette of colors. KlassicKolors is available in a selection of solar reflective hues, ranging from deep red, blue, green and gray to earth tones of beige, tans and browns. Custom formulated colors are also available.

The TundraBrick Brick Veneer from Eldorado Stone has a standard sized profile approximately 7 7/8 by 2 1/2 in. Although the size is consistent in height and length, the textures are unique and distinctive. The slightly squared edges are made to look chiseled and worn down from being weathered for hundreds of years.
