A dark, uninviting 1960s “builder special” gets an airy, functional and stylish update from a California designer.
Project Highlights
Designed by Ione Victoria, owner/designer of Paradise Interior Design, this previously cramped, unorganized and dark kitchen received a full makeover, complete with multiple lighting fixtures for task and spot lighting as well as operable skylights to incorporate natural light and contribute to an overall airy feel.
Since the husband-and-wife clients varied greatly in height, Victoria staggered the counter and cabinet heights to create multiple view levels and provide visual interest for visitors. To enhance the look, white glass cut in curved patterns was used in both the raised-island countertop and the breakfast booth countertop.
Custom cabinetry, designed by Victoria, plays a large role in the layout as well. The cabinets feature highly figured Anegre wood with a clear finish and solid maple interiors. According to Victoria, the Euro construction door style helps simplify the somewhat complicated space.
A unique, specially requested wine rack that holds some 33 bottles of wine was set near the wet bar area, giving the clients’ easy access to their wine collection while enjoying a quiet dinner at home or cooking and entertaining for guests.
