2007 NKBA Design Competition Category 3 Clean Lines and Efficient Layouts Mark Top Large Kitchen Designs Large Kitchens (more than 50 sq. ft. of countertops)

Designed by Heidi Schumann of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based V6B Design Group, this kitchen’s breezy yet traditional look is achieved by blending colors, textures and styles. White cabinetry by Crystal Cabinets contrasts against Absolute Black granite countertops, while a glass backsplash evokes images of the sea. A modern appliance center features a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Miele oven and Dacor warming drawer, concealed behind a flip-up door. Kindred’s honed granite farmhouse sink adds an earthy touch to the kitchen’s beachside charm.

Creating an open look was the challenge facing Sandra L. Steiner-Houck, CKD, of Columbia, PA-based Steiner & Houck, Inc., in this kitchen. She began by incorporating a large window into the sink area to enhance the room’s natural light. Custom stainless steel countertops extend around the perimeter of the kitchen. The island is teak-topped, with cabinetry throughout the room by Premier Custom-Built. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher and GE microwave.

Needing to accommodate the spatial needs of a tall client, Tricia Hauser Tidemann of Minneapolis, MN-based North Star Kitchens, LLC incorporated a large island and tall cabinetry from Quality Custom Cabinetry. The raised bar height of the Lapidus granite island countertops wraps around the room, providing taller landing spaces close to the Thermador refrigerator, microwave and oven. The raised portion serves as a visual barrier while it creates a work triangle complete with an Asko dishwasher, and Thermador cooktop, warming drawer and ventilation.

Dewitt Talmadge Beall and co-designer Hye Won Lee of Studio City, CA-based DeWitt Designer Kitchens created this early-morning retreat with a scuplture-inspired curved café counter in the center of the kitchen. Veneered in Mappa Burl, the counter is topped with thick glass, raised to bar level and supported by stainless steel cylinders. The counter is lit by three pendants, as well as recessed low-voltage lighting and a skylight. Natural maple Rojas custom cabinetry flanks the perimeter with textured Verde Jade granite countertops and a sheer sage glass backsplash.
