2007 NKBA Design Competition Category 7 Storage-Saving Solutions Highlight Stunning Large Bathroom Designs Large Bathrooms (more than 55 sq. ft.)

Elina Katsioula-Beall, CKD, and Sarah Michalowski of DeWitt Designer Kitchens in Studio City, CA, converted an inefficient combination of adjoining baths, master bath and powder room into a private master retreat. The new space features a corner tub by whirlpool tub that isolates the custom seamless glass shower enclosure from the rest of the room. The backsplash features creamy anticato limestone that wraps around a low wall to conceal the Kohler toilet. Limestone is featured on the floor as well, while Empire Marble & Granite shower tile is used in the glass shower. Natural maple cabinetry from UltraCraft Cabinetry provides ample towel and toiletries storage.

For Betty L. Ravnik, CKD, CBD, of Alexandria, MN-based Ravnik Interior Design, this guest bath offers many storage and spa features. Suspended cabinets with undercabinet lighting from Artemide expand the visual space and provide a nightlight for guests. Curved lines define the front of the cabinetry, soffits, tub deck and face, glass block wall and back tub wall, while the floor tiles are cut into narrow bands with petite squares of glass tile to create a pattern for the flat walls of the shower. Cambria countertops, a Kohler sink and toilet, and TDF Atlantic travertine flooring finish off the design.

Faced with the need to incorporate barrier-free products, but not wanting the institutional look often associated with them, Anthony Binns, CKD, CBD, of Pickering, Ontario, Canada-based Binns Kitchen + Bath Design, created a space with curved walls for a custom look. The shower, featuring a KWC America Master Trio showerhead, offers the client full accessibility, while the toilet area features a custom barn door curved to match the walls and provide privacy. The look is completed by concrete countertops, cabinetry by ArtCraft Kitchens and fixtures from Kohler.

A joint effort between Dewitt Talmadge Beall and co-designers Elina Katsioula-Beall and Sarah Michalowski resulted in this Zen retreat, designed for jet-setting clients who need a space to unwind after their hectic traveling schedule. To accomplish this, the design team, of DeWitt Designer Kitchens in Studio City, CA, borrowed space from a walk-in closet behind the vanity wall, while introducing a Kohler corner whirlpool tub and a custom steam shower enclosure with a Mr.Steam unit. Custom, caramel-colored bamboo cabinetry from Corsi Wright offsets the White Roman travertine flooring. Vertical glass tiles that contrast with the round mirrors over the vanity accent the design.
