2007 NKBA Design Competition Category 8 Style and Function Permeate Master Suite/Bathroom Designs Master Suite/Bathrooms (includes closets, dressing rooms, etc.)

Needing to incorporate a treasure trove of high-end products into a small space, Scott and Sandra Gjesdahl of Kirkland, WA-based Bristol Design and Construction got to work. They began by hiding pre-existing obstacles, such as a water heater, furnace and washer/dryer behind sliding shoji screen doors from Bristol Design and Construction. The team installed custom Lumicor windows into the shower for natural light, enhancing the Carrerra marble countertops and custom cabinetry by Bristol Design and Construction. The BainUltra tub also offers a unique element, as the Imbuia wood tub deck extends and cantilevers to create a bench for added comfort.

‘Three for the price of one’ is the best way to describe this master suite by Tracey Scalzo, CKD, CBD, of Eurotech Cabinetry, Inc., and co-designer Fabiola Softas. The space includes a closet area, a ventilated area for dress shirts and a vanity area. The design team chose Dutch Made cabinetry with the same door style and mahogany finish to create a warm feel. The cabinetry is accented by Diamond White marble countertops and cabinetry base and crown profiles that are set to match the painted trim.

A warm, European aesthetic and ample storage space were the main features requested by the clients for their master suite, designed by Peter Harms of Minneapolis, MN-based North Star Kitchens, LLC and co-designer Tom Rauscher of Minneapolis, MN-based Rauscher & Robichaud. The pair designed the bathroom into separate rooms, with one housing a Kohler toilet and tub, as well as a Kate-Lo Tile & Stone shower. The main bath area features double sinks, also from Kohler, while a pair of custom convex cabinets from Wm Ohs offers additional storage and allows for more walking space. The design is further complemented by marble Kate-Lo Tile & Stone countertops, fixtures from Rohl LLC, and large beveled mirrors.

A Southwestern style featuring natural materials and natural lighting permeates this master suite by Cheryl Hamilton-Gray, CKD, of Encinitas, CA-based Hamilton-Gray Design, Inc. The bathroom features Kohler sinks and a toilet located next to the linked closet, which is accessed through a custom, curved wooden door. Another curved wall forms the frameless, built-in glass screen. A freestanding ceramic tub from Sunrise Specialty Co. sits in front of the custom windows and is raised on a terra cotta-tiled platform. A wall featuring textured tile, handmade by a Santa Fe artist, adds to the room’s authentic charm.
