Masters of Design

Innovation and creativity marked the winners of the 28th annual Master Design Awards contest.

Innovative design ideas and dramatic functional improvements were the hallmarks of the winning kitchens and baths that took top honors in the 28th annual Master Design Awards competition. The annual contest, open to design and remodeling professionals, is sponsored by Qualified Remodeler, a sister publication of Kitchen & Bath Design News.

Entries were judged in a variety of categories, including kitchen and bath projects from several different price points.

In the kitchen, the desire for personalization was clearly a key concern, as seen in many of the winning designs. In the bath, space was a top issue. To that end, in situations where building out was not an option, the winning designs succeeded by maximizing existing space, as well as expanding storage in new and creative ways.

But whether the challenge was to add space in the bath or help make the kitchen the action center of family life, the winning designs showed both improved functionality and enhanced style.

Judges evaluated each entry based on aesthetic appeal, construction techniques, handling of unusual situations or problems, attention to detail, functionality of space, financial success and the overall impression of the finished product. They selected winners in 21 categories, including Kitchens above $100,000, Kitchens $50,000-$100,000, Kitchens below $50,000, Baths over $50,000, Baths $30,000-$50,000 and Baths under $30,000.

And next year, with an eye on current trends, Qualified Remodeler is adding a category specifically for ‘green’ remodeling and design.
Judging this year’s entries was a panel of remodeling professionals including Dennis Allen of Santa Barbara, CA-based Allen & Associates; Greg Miedema, CGR, CGB, CAPS of Dakota Builders in Tucson, AZ; Toni LaPelusa, CR of Niles, IL-based LaPelusa Home Improvements; John Quaregna, CR of Jay-Cue Construction of North Bergen, NJ and Patricia Davis Brown, NCIDQ, ASID, CKD, CBD of Patricia Davis Brown Fine Cabinetry of Vero Beach, FL.
