With a budget of approximately $800,000 most remodelers would expect to be able to deliver a great whole-house solution. But a lot depends upon the scope. In its remodel of 1952 1.5 story home in Houston, Crawford Renovation delivered a lot, making the investment very worthwhile and quite a value.
Consider some of the major accomplishments of this project. Nearly every room of the house was rebuilt and updated with new finishes and improved functionality. The kitchen was moved to the center of the first floor. The area formerly occupied by the kitchen was converted into space for a utility room, storage space, a powder room and an elevator shaft. (This makes sense because an existing outside door from the adjoining porte cochere will make this space a likely everyday entrance to the home.)
The existing front entryway was pulled apart and converted into a spiral staircase. The original stairs became the back stairs. The master suite was expanded. New piers and a new slab were poured to accommodate a larger family room and outdoor living arrangement. A second bedroom on the first floor was eliminated to accommodate the larger kitchen/family room configuration. Finally, the existing upstairs was reconfigured to accommodate four bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a giant media room.
“The original 1952 home lacked curb appeal, flow, light, storage and space for the family and the neighborhood’s strict building codes meant that we had to stay within the existing front and side parameters,” the Crawford team explained in their award application. “In the end we created a French Country dream home. The renovation resulted in improved function, comfort and style, and a house that the family is proud to call home.” |
