Within the confines of a modest-sized existing bathroom, The Bainbridge Crew of Charlotte, N.C., found a way to bring in light and a general feeling of openness to this affordable bathroom “upfit,” as they called it in their application for the award. The Master Design Award judges felt that that level of improvement is quite dramatic considering an investment of only $16,000.

To achieve a contemporary, uncluttered space while maintaining a classic style, the Bainbridge team focused on the details. They selected a heather gray marble for the floor and walls throughout the space, helping to unify it. A semiglassed shower enclosure adds height to the room. Also, the remodeling team selected gentle accents like stainless steel finishes, white walls, chic sconces and a delicate black tile edging to achieve a subtle look. Another key decision was to leave the fixtures in their original locations. The net effect is an up-to-date, timeless look.
