The owners of this Cape Cod saltbox wanted to up their home’s curb appeal — and square footage. A smart 950-sq.-ft. Craftsman-style addition succeeded in doing both for this Falls Church, Va. room addition.
By moving the front door, Carnemark Systems & Design, Inc. was able to make a larger foyer for the homeowners and create an open stairwell with knee walls. This created a visual communication between the living and dining rooms.
Arts-and-crafts detailing throughout redefine the tone inside. This includes the fireplace tiles and mantel, the screen porch’s beaded ceiling, the custom-milled columns and trim, and the period lighting fixtures.
Upstairs, two new bedrooms and a new bath make room for the homeowner’s growing family. Adding a big dormer upstairs gives more space to an existing bedroom and contributes to the improved façade.
The exterior also got a face-lift with a detailed paint scheme, cedar-shake siding and a mahogany front door. To cap this project, Carnemark Systems & Design, Inc. put on a copper-roofed portico — extending just far enough to welcome visitors and passersby. The final total for this room addition was right around $300,000.
