Alan Stein and his team at Tanglewood Conservatories of Denton, Md. are no strangers to award-winning design. In 2003 a conservatory addition they built won Best of Show and graced the cover of this magazine. This year’s winning entry in the sunroom/conservatory category is equally strong.
The clients, in Seaford, Del., wanted a retreat away from the main house that could be used for many different functions. Inside, they sought a well-appointed sitting area and a spa to serve as a whimsical getaway. The resulting conservatory adds less than 300 sq. ft. but evokes a rich, mature and timeless feeling that marries well with the existing home.
Set in the garden, the copper roof, a gabled entry, the transom styled roof windows, and a rich display of masonry fit well within the home’s existing garden. Inside, the finishes are equally rich featuring a large masonry fireplace, a wetbar, a stone floor, and an abundance of warm colored wood finishes.
