Pasadena, CAThe Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts joins the worlds of art and music together every year through something very special the largest house and garden tour in the U.S. This year's 40th Annual Pasadena Showcase House Design, as in years' past, benefitted the Los Angeles Philharmonic and PSHA's youth music programs.
"Through proceeds generated by the Showcase House, PSHA has contributed more than $11 million to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, making it the largest single donor to this world-class orchestra," PSHA comments.
The project this past spring was a Georgian Colonial estate in
La Canada Flintridge, which was built in 1918. More than 50
designers participated in the overall showhouse, with David Reaume
of David Reaume Construction & Design in Pasadena, CA, charged
with designing a state-of-the-art kitchen.
At home both as an entertainment area and a family great room, the design features a kitchen, breakfast area and media room. The redesigned space, which was originally two separate rooms, also includes a new fireplace, 54" plasma screen television and state-of-the-art sound system.
To reflect American luxury in the kitchen, Reaume utilized stainless steel appliances throughout the space. The sleek, high-end appliances provided a striking contrast to the room's Georgian-style custom cabinetry, which was used to reflect the overall style of the home.
"My goal in transforming the kitchen was to modernize the space with sophisticated stainless steel appliances, but to maintain its Georgian appeal," Reaume offers.
The custom cabinetry from Expressions in Wood features multi-colored painted finishes that complement the kitchen's beige, blue and yellow color scheme. Cream/yellow-colored cabinets are contrasted with taller, blue hued cabinets that feature embellishments to complement the home's overall design. The blue tone of these cabinets is also featured on the island, as well as a line of cabinets along a far wall. Brass cabinet knobs complement the room's decadent decor.
Caesarstone countertops in a pale cream shade top the creamy hued cabinets, blending in with the overall design.
A swirled marble countertop from Renaissance Marble in white with pale gray that complements the island's gray/blue hues tops the island. The countertop features a curved lip at one end for casual undercounter seating.
A beige backsplash over the range that features tiles supplied by Waterworks pulls the whole look together.
Appliances incorporated into the room's design include items from Bosch, U-Line and Thermador. A 48" range, 30" wall oven, a 24" warming drawer and two four-program dishwashers, all from Thermador's Professional Series line, add function to the kitchen space. Side-by-side refrigeration
from the brand's new line of built-in refrigerators completes the room.
The 48" ventilation hood, also from Thermador, is encased in an ornately designed cover that matches the paler cabinets. It is a focal point for the kitchen, and features embellishments to accentuate the Georgian style of the room.
An apron front sink in stainless steel complements the
surrounding appliances, and it is finished with a Victorian-style
brass faucet supplied by Waterworks. The company also supplied the
complementary faucet featured over the stainless bar sink located
in the island. A pot filler faucet, also finished in brass, is also
located directly over the range for convenience when doing food
preparation at the cooktop.
A rectangular sculpted metal light fixture over the island, which was supplied by Guy Chaddock, features mini lampshades that add to the overall homey aesthetic. A complementary circular light fixture that features simulated melted candlesticks with chandelier lights is situated over the breakfast nook, which is located to the side of the kitchen. Single wall sconces in the breakfast area also pick up the design of both fixtures.
Wood plank floors from Pilcaya in a warm tone complete the overall look.
"The kitchen is the pulse of the home and I wanted to ensure that this project created a kitchen that embodies the ultimate expression of style and culinary appreciation," stresses Reaume.
In addition to the light fixture, the adjoining breakfast area features a built-in corner bench in wood with a golden finish, topped with softly hued gray cushions to pick up the colors of the kitchen. A brown marble table is highlighted on the other two sides with a period-style bench with gold cushion, and an ornate wood with leather antique chair.
The media room also combines the grays and yellows of the
kitchen, with floor to ceiling columns encasing display shelves and
a newly constructed stone fireplace.
Cleaning with Style
Also showing off its individual style was the laundry room, which was designed by Mario Saverino and Kenn Myers of Pasadena, CA-based MK and Company Interior Design. The bold, colorful deluxe laundry room features period elements combined with up-to-the-minute appliances.
"The laundry room featured materials and colors carefully chosen
to reflect the room's history, but were used in more modern ways to
emphasize their graphic quality," offers Saverino and Myers. "For
example, gingham wallpaper with stylized images of an 18th century
laundress, clothes basket and other domestic items contrasted
against charcoal and cream colored ceramic tiles for a fresh
A custom-designed ironing and linen storage cupboard and period-style porcelain laundry sink also added to the room's overall look. Ample storage space and a large folding area were figured into the room's design.
Appliances in the laundry area were supplied by Bosch, including the Nexxt Premium Washer, Nexxt Premium Gas Dryer, the Axxis Washer and the Axxis Vented Dryer.
