NKBA 2004 Design competition: Category 3: large kitchens

Bigger isn't always better unless the room is left in the hands of Cameron Snyder, CKD, of Kitchen Concepts, Inc. in Norwell, MA. Reworking an extremely large, long and angular kitchen into a functional cooking and gathering space was no easy task for the designer, who had the added challenge of dealing with the seemingly endless feeling of spaciousness created by 24-ft. high ceilings.

The architectural style of the house was key to the redesign of the kitchen. Custom mullion doors follow the gothic window located above the range, and the double crown and dental moldings complement the home's overall design.

For effective use of the massive space, double-height islands that mirror each other create work triangles that allow multiple cooks to work simultaneously. The lightly distressed and worn cabinets of the island, which feature soft green coloring, break up the continuous look of the off-white glazed cabinetry used throughout the room, all from Kitchen Concepts' Heirloom Collection. The result is a warmer, more cohesive look, Snyder says. Granite Esmeralda Green and SPEVKA Iroko wood countertops finish the cabinets and islands.

The Viking range, situated between the islands, is the focal point of the room from the entrance, due to the arch above it, supported by corbels. Pull-out upper and lower columns surrounding the range, as well as roll-out shelves in the base of the cabinets, offer storage.

For functionality, three sinks from Franke Consumer Products, two Miele dishwashers, a warming drawer, Sharp microwave, Sub-Zero wine storage unit, Best Blower ventilation and a built-in wet bar are part of the mix, making multi-tasking and entertaining easy. The Sub-Zero refrigerator design imitates a period armoire.
