NKBA 2004 Design competition: Category 4: open plan kitchens

An eye-catching mix of colors, textures, shapes and finishes gives this contemporary kitchen plenty of eclectic appeal. Designed by Tracey Scalzo, CKD, CBD, and David Asher, of the Sarasota, FL-based Eurotech Cabinetry Inc., the kitchen uses an efficient L-shape to maximize storage while a host of striking materials help maximize style.

The kitchen which not only won top honors in the Open Plan Kitchen category, it also took home Best Overall Design for this year's competition features an open, inviting layout that imparts a bright, uncluttered feeling to the space. A central island incorporates a freestanding breakfast table, allowing the clients greater flexibility in terms of seating.

Artcraft Kitchens and Eurotech custom cabinets provide storage, while frosted glass inserts in the wall cabinets reflect light and help maintain the clean, streamlined appearance of the kitchen.

To maximize functionality, the kitchen features a Gaggenau oven, Bosch dishwasher, Sub-Zero refrigerator, GE cooktop, Sharp microwave and custom hood with Best housing for ventilation.

Adding visual and textural appeal are the rich granite countertops, warm wood flooring and glass topping the table. Further contemporary appeal comes from the curves on the radius fronts of the kitchen wall cabinets and custom stainless steel vent enclosure, which are echoed in the curves of the entertainment wall.
