Tucked in the remote hills of Sonoma County, a couple commissioned this single-family residence accompanied by a car port, pool and guesthouse. The modern collection of buildings is situated on a steep, down-sloping site where they are revealed through the winding approach along a private driveway. The siting of the buildings creates a village-like relationship to one another softened by the valley view, and natural and designed landscape. Confronted with a steep down-sloping lot in a rural setting, the challenge was how to split the program and buildings, set them within the hillside to reduce massing, while creating a natural progression from entry level to pool terrace level below. The buildings needed to create privacy and an enclosure in the open landscape. Stepping down in section, the double-height main living volume with loft-like upper bedroom level, and double-height glazing connect the entry level directly to views and the pool terrace below.
