PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The South Surf Road Residence is a summer home for a family of four that resides full time in Georgia. Located on a flat, relatively small 60- by 108-ft. oceanfront lot in Silver Beach along one of New Jersey’s barrier islands, the house is two and a half stories with 3,500 sq. ft. of interior heated space and approximately 300 additional sq. ft. of exterior space distributed throughout the screened porch, covered balconies and the exterior portion of the third level crow’s nest. There is also a 20- by 30-ft. deck along the east side. Drawing inspiration from the classic shingle style beach houses of the Northeast as well as borrowing elements from the architecture of communities such as Seaside and Rosemary Beach, Fla., the aesthetic here is an eclectic mix of various styles that have been reinterpreted for contemporary living. Our biggest challenge was achieving the client’s program on an extremely small lot with restrictive zoning regulations such as lot coverage and building setbacks. The house took much of its form from adhering to the strict township setbacks and building coverage requirements as well as solving the client’s building program. No variances were sought in the design of this home.
