Design Duo Dreams Beyond Existing Spaces

Many kitchen and bath designers wistfully remember the pre-recession days, when jobs were plentiful and budgets more lavish.

However, Gil Kovalsky and Kobi Aharon have nothing to make comparisons against. There are no pre-recession benchmarks or previous goals to strive toward because the duo opened their Englewood, NJ-based design firm, Modiani Kitchens and Interiors, in 2010…after the recession officially ended.

“When we opened, the economy was challenging,” says Kovalsky, who, while new to kitchen/bath firm ownership, has a background in construction and nearly two decades of business experience. Likewise, his business partner, Aharon, is a respected expert in European modern kitchen design, first in Israel and later in Manhattan. The two men clicked, both personally and professionally, and joined forces to launch the business.

In November 2011, the partners made the business more permanent by opening a showroom…a 3,000-sq.-ft. Soho-style space. Equipped with a full-size working kitchen, they host cooking demonstrations and other events, including a recent ASID CEU course about kitchen ventilation.

They also make their showroom available for fund raising events, supporting several local non-profit events. “This is a great way to get exposed in the community and to help the community,” says Aharon. “We love that we have an opportunity to give back.”

Functional, modern and sophisticated

The designers, who are both certified by European and Asian institutes, strive to keep and maintain the high-end standards with which they established the business.

They and their team of designers specialize in kitchen design and installation, using their knowledge of ergonomics, surface technology, appliance function and storage philosophy to create one-of-a-kind kitchens that are functional, modern and sophisticated.

They create spaces that are “artful in design and deliberate in presentation,” based on a foundation of contemporary kitchen cabinets from Cesar and Modiani Custom, and traditional kitchen cabinetry from Rutt. From their showroom, located just 14 minutes driving distance from Manhattan, they cater to upper middle class clients in the city as well as in Bergen County, NJ.

“We are dedicated to creating breathtaking luxury kitchens with revolutionary functionality,” notes Kovalsky, who indicates that this goal coincides with the firm’s design and business philosophy, which is simplicity, functionality, great kitchens and happy clients. “Factors that contribute to our success are thinking of our clients’ needs first, providing phenomenal service and products, and being honest with our clients.”

Elevate design

Modiani services include kitchen design, interior design and kitchen remodeling, where designs are created with the personal taste and style of each client in mind. “From sleek, cool and contemporary to traditional, warm and handcrafted, nearly anything is possible,” says Aharon.

They work closely with each client to ensure the kitchen design will seamlessly integrate into clients’ homes. “Maximizing space with artful design, [our firm] combines inspired form and innovative functionality to create kitchens that are masterful, breathtaking and sophisticated,” says Kovalsky.

He continues, “By incorporating freestanding pieces into the existing architecture of the home, our designers maximize the space within the kitchen and elevate the impact of the kitchen redesign.”

Relying on decades of experience in interior design, construction and architecture, Modiani designers work directly with clients to discover possibility within the home, simultaneously promoting harmony by creating luxury and continuity within and across spaces, the partners note.

“The home is an ideal space that represents the roots of a family,” says Aharon. “The core concept of Modiani designs grows out of the style of the homeowner, the existing space and the architecture of the home. Out of these concepts, a sophisticated, seamless design that ties the home together is created.”

“Whether a client desires a European-inspired kitchen or a traditionally inspired kitchen, the designers at Modiani are driven by a passion for the relationship between presentation and function,” says Kovalsky. “They have eyes for artful and luxurious design, innovative solutions and efficiency. Using luxurious cabinetry lines, Modiani discovers new and unique possibilities by dreaming beyond what exists in a space to create a kitchen that is luxurious and functional.”

Modiani designers believe that the kitchen is a special place in the home. “It is at times the epicenter of the home,” he continues, “the beating heart of all that happens within the home at large. Therefore, with kitchen cabinetry installation, our designers work tirelessly to create a space that reflects the sensibilities, style and ideals of the homeowner.”
