The homeowners were living in a one story home on Alberta Drive (see site plan). A larger lot became available on Lakewood Drive, an adjacent street. The homeowners purchased this lot to build their dream home and decided to keep the one story home to use as a guest home. Luckily, the lots connected allowing them to create a "compound". The requirement for their dream home was that it must have a "Zen" atmosphere and allow them to age in place. One of the challenges was to aesthetically connect the main home to the existing guest house. The other challenge was to create the homeowner's required "Zen" atmosphere for the main home and to design the home's floorplan taking aging in place into consideration. Connecting the two homes was accomplished with a center garden and floating step walkway which mimics the main home's entrance. The-garden inCludes shared sitting areas, pool, and outdoor dining area with arbor. These elements visually tie the two properties together.
The "Zen" atmosphere was accomplished using water and fire features, a yoga room, and and an indoor/outdoor floor plan creating a connection with the outdoors. Flowing water is used in the main entrance and a garden fountain. Master suites on both levels, elevator, media room, library, and rear entrance from detached garage were designed for aging in place.
