Square Footage (unfinished): 1,840 square feet (Garage and Unfinished Basement)

Homeowner’s occupation: Restaurant Owner

Sited on a steep and narrow lakefront knob, this castellated, monastic inspired home provides expansive open-water views across Lake Jocassee. Stepping with the hillside topography, the home is divided among three floors. Each is arranged to artfully frame dramatic lake views from the interior and porches. Inside, four bedroom suites, an open great room, kitchen, and media room accommodate comfortable family gatherings. The covered outdoor dining area and nearby belfry tower are connected by a covered terrace that enhances the home's outdoor connectivity. Natural stone construction provides a solid connection to the site and reinforces the home's softly aged character. The narrow and extremely steep lakefront site imposed multiple challenges given the sizeable building program. In addition to the careful siting of the home, there were two primary project requirements: 1. Design a home that connects outdoor living spaces to the home and capture expansive views of Lake Jocassee. 2. Design a lake home inspired by the rural monestary and winemaking structures of Western Europe and imbue it with the character of a structure evolved over centuries of adaptation and evolution. The organization of the home is guided by the unique qualities and constraints of the hillside. It's plan rises out of the site as a series of interconnected architectural elements and outdoor spaces, affording every room a view and access to the water. The resulting building forms, materials and details work together with the natural, rocky landscape to anchor the home on the site. Hand cut fieldstone, Italian limestone, copper and cedar elements work in harmony to create a structure that leaves visitors with the impression that the home has been on the peninsula for a time spanning the ages.
