Title: Owner, Fleming Construction LLC., in Des Moines, Iowa
Year Founded: 2001
Number of Employees: Three
Type of company: Residential Remodeling Company
Who started your company? I started my company at age 24 with very limited resources or knowledge of the industry.
When and how did you choose this career? I started in this industry building countertops as a part-time job while in college. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to make construction a fulltime career before I finished school.
What did you do before becoming a remodeler? I was an electrician, both residential and commercial work. I completed my Masters work while I was moonlighting with Fleming Construction.
What does being part of NAHB mean to you? NAHB represents my interest in government affairs and makes me feel as though I have a voice in this industry.
How has the remodeling profession changed since you’ve been involved? Social media is one of the biggest changes that I have seen. It makes it easy for a smaller company, like mine, to have a bigger presence. Also, the amount of government regulation has increased, and it seems to take up a larger part of my time within the company.
What have you done to grow your business during the current economy? I participate in our Tour of Remodeled Homes as well as the Home and Remodeling show. We cross promote these events on social media with the other participants to broaden our audiences. But I really feel that simply following up with each potential client has been the biggest positive change that we made.
What is the most unusual project your company has completed? We once had to put a Nebraska Huskers logo on a mirror in a custom bar. Living in the Hawkeye state, that made for an unusual request.
Anything else you’d like to mention about career accomplishments? I feel like we have a lot more to achieve as a company, but growing through the recession is quite an accomplishment.
What is your favorite item in your office? I have this old ladder that my grandfather used for his sign painting business that I have made into a mantle for the fireplace.
What is the best advice you’ve received in your career? Know what your good at and stick to that.
What motivates you every day? I really enjoy the relationships that I have built with my clients and the people I work with.
As you were growing up, what did you want to be? I didn’t really know what I wanted to “be.” I just knew I wanted to start my own business.
If a movie was made about your life, who would be cast as you? People say that I look like Owen Wilson. I don’t find that insulting.
