Once a high-tech novelty, apps have become a way of life for many design professionals who go nowhere without their smart phone or tablet. Whether tracking financial expenditures, making project notes on site, organizing info or staying in touch with clients, apps can lighten the work load and streamline and simplify everything from drawing and designing to ordering, pricing, tracking shipments and more.
KBDN’s “What’s App?” is a new department that will be spotlighting apps of relevance to the kitchen and bath industry throughout the year. This month’s app, called Room Planner, was created to help designers place and arrange rooms, furniture, cabinets, doors and windows.
The Chief Architect Room Planner App
What it is: Room Planner by Chief Architect is a free mobile design app for home design and room layout.
What it does: With Room Planner, users can quickly place and arrange rooms, furniture, cabinets, doors and windows. The app is designed to help users visualize the design in 2D and 3D. By allowing clients to “see” the space evolve in 3D, clients are better able to understand how their kitchen or bath will look when it’s completed. Designers can also use the app for remodeling projects to measure the as-built rooms (manually or with a Bluetooth laser) and import the file into the desktop version of Chief Architect (PC or Mac) and complete the design details for the project
Who it’s for: Designers, architects, builders, do-it-yourselfers and anyone else interested in designing
Why you need it: This is a helpful tool for doing initial room layouts during client consultations, as well as measuring as-built remodel projects.
Available Since: Launched in 2011
Who makes it: Chief Architect Software
Platform: iOS (Android coming this month)
Where to find it: It’s free and available at iTunes
