Stain resistance, low VOCs, durability priorities for paints/caulks

Benjamin Moore

How do your paints and/or caulks help residential remodelers?

In any remodeling job, painting is one of the last and many times over looked projects. Give yourself peace of mind and your remodeling project the final shine it deserves by budgeting upfront to get quality paint. The best remodel job will only shine with quality paint finishes. Benjamin Moore uses superior ingredients with better hide and performance, which means less coats and less labor for you.

What’s the next advancement in the paint/caulk market?

The Benjamin Moore Research & Development team is constantly working on new product innovations to increase performance. With our patented Gennex water based colors colorants, you will get the color your client wants, and it will stay that way for years to come. We recently introduced Advance interior paint, the newest technology in trim enamel. These water reducible alkyd enamels give you the fine finish of traditional alkyds in a low VOC and low odor product that cleans up with soap and water.

PPG Architectural Coatings

What’s the next advancement in the paint/caulk market?

The latest advancement in the interior latex category is focused on stain resistance and maximizing the life span of the homeowner’s wall finishes.  Stain resistant technology enables homeowners to really live with their paint, enduring all life can throw at their walls without sacrificing durability and beauty. In late 2013, PPG Architectural Coatings launched Manor Hall Interior Paint, Primer & Stain Repellent in One.  The super premium line was updated with a new formula developed to resist household stains through the combination of resin and proprietary formulation.

Liquid Nails

How do your adhesives help residential remodelers?

For some projects, nails and screws just aren’t enough. For those situations, we recommend a heavy duty construction adhesive.  It will stick to most construction substrates, add holding power, fill gaps between surfaces, and remains flexible for better long-term durability. Liquid Nails Brand scientifically formulates its products for specific applications and use conditions. For example, Drywall Adhesive is formulated to deaden sound between rooms, adds energy efficiency and also reduces nail pops.

What’s the next advancement in the paint/caulk market?

Advancement in the adhesive and sealant markets are happening on a continuous basis. New building materials are being introduced all the time, which present challenges from an adhesion perspective. New methods of installing materials also present challenges regarding initial tack/hold, cure time or dry time and long-term durability of bonds, particularly in outdoor environments. We also have regulatory challenges to continuously reduce volatile organic compound content. Over the last several years, there has been an increasing emphasis on improving indoor air quality, so there is a drive toward more low emitting material including adhesives and sealants.

What's the next advancement in the paint market?

Today’s paints go far beyond the primary functions of aesthetics and surface protection. The next generation of coatings offer additional benefits to a homeowner – everything from enhancing indoor air quality to reducing energy use. For example, Sherwin-Williams Harmony Interior Acrylic Latex Paint is zero VOC so it won’t degrade a room’s air quality. Harmony Paint also contains Formaldehyde Reducing Technology, which helps promote better indoor air quality by reducing airborne concentrations of formaldehyde and other aldehydes. For an exterior example, Sherwin-Williams Loxon XP IR Reflective Coating delivers outstanding protection on masonry surfaces with advanced infrared technology that actually reflects solar rays back into the atmosphere. With this coating, the net result is lower exterior surface temperatures, less heat gain, cooler interiors, reduced energy use and increased occupant comfort. These are two examples of products that do something far beyond providing aesthetics and basic surface protection. Expect to continue seeing paints offer benefits of this nature in the future.
