With smaller, recession-style budgets, designers are doing more with less in the kitchen, and the results range from bizarre to brilliant. Treehugger expands on small kitchens , and uses the founder's 420-sq.-ft. apartment as a model for new, smaller induction cooktops . Fancy doesn't have to be enormous, turns out, and includes brands familiar to us all. Inspiration from Apartment Therapy , whose editors know a thing or two about making the most of tight spaces. January 16, a beautiful day to build a Habitat House, no? EPA administrator Lisa Jackson is urging Americans to make today , a day remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a day of service to the environment. She's posted some ways to get involved on the Greenservations blog. "One way to get involved is to participate in projects that help reduce waste, or cut water and energy use in your home and community. - Tuesday April 12, 2011Is there an alternative to electric compressor refrigerators? Stephen & Rebekah Hren thought so in an interesting project book they wrote together...two years ago. [via Chelsea Green] So, where are we on sustainable appliances now? Claims made by companies touting low water consumption for dishwashers and Energy Star ratings for things like ovens and refrigerators are everywhere. The Hrens, in their book The Carbon-Free Home: 36 Remodeling Projects to Help Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit, covered a variety of alternative green appliance technologies, including solar-powered gas absorption refrigerators. The unfortunate keyword in that sentence is “alternative.†At what point will these work their way into the mainstream...
