(Valley Forge, Pa.) – CertainTeed(R) brand ceiling and exterior sheathing products are lending a hand in sustainability, acoustic control and aesthetic appeal to the recently opened Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, N.J.
Operated by the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS), the new Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital is a 450,000 square-foot, 450-bed, state-of-the art facility that includes a treatment mall with more than 21 activity rooms and a large auditorium. The hospital campus also features residential cottages that will accommodate up to 60 additional patients. It replaces five aging psychiatric treatment buildings and the original Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital building, an imposing 673,706 square-foot stone structure that was built in 1876.
Greystone was designed by Philadelphia-based architectural corporation VITETTA with project construction managed by Torcon, Inc. of Red Bank, N.J. It features 450,000 square feet of CertainTeed GlasRoc(R) Exterior Sheathing on the building installed by contractor Sloan & Company of West Caldwell, N.J. Sloan & Company also installed 400,000 square feet of CertainTeed Ecophon Focus(TM) DG and Cashmere(R) ceiling panels.
“Ecophon Focus DG and Cashmere ceiling panels provide an excellent mix of acoustic control and aesthetic appeal needed in healthcare facilities,” says Lisa Santerian, Marketing Director for CertainTeed Ceilings. “We believe that Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital will be very pleased with the long-lasting performance of these products.”
GlasRoc Sheathing provides long-term protection from weather exposure, which is important during the construction phase of a building. The product’s superior water-resistant surface and open water vapor transmission core creates a naturally moisture- and mold-resistant product.
“GlasRoc Sheathing’s durability, water, and fire resistance offers the protection needed to provide a more sustainable, longer life for the facility,” says Ed Maloney, Product Manager of CertainTeed Gypsum.
According to Sloan & Company, the CertainTeed ceiling panels and sheathing were easy to work with and the project turned out well.
“Everything went together very well with the CertainTeed ceiling panels and sheathing,” says John Hawken, Project Manager for Sloan & Company. “The products were easy to cut and handle, and everything was delivered on time.”
Manufactured from high-density glass wool, CertainTeed’s Ecophon Focus DG ceiling panels create a semi-concealed suspension, while providing excellent light reflectance of 0.85 and unusually high sound absorption (international Class A). The panels, which are part of the Designer Series collection from CertainTeed, offer a LEED(R) recycled content of 73 percent — the highest of any ceiling panel available in North America.
CertainTeed Cashmere ceiling panels, from the Performance Line of products, create an upscale appearance, with a lightly textured wet-felted profile. The 3/4-inch thick classic mineral fiber panel is available in a full selection of decorative edge details and comes standard with a 10-year limited warranty against visible sag. These panels offer a LEED recycled content of 45 percent.
Featuring patented Embedded Glass Reinforced Gypsum(TM) (EGRG(TM)) technology, GlasRoc combines a paperless gypsum surface with reinforcing glass mats that are fully embedded into a water-resistant gypsum core. It is compatible with most exterior wall systems and applications. GlasRoc is the only ASTM C 1177 sheathing evaluated to the 2006 International Building Code and International Residential Code as referenced in the International Code Council’s (ICC) ESR-2460 report.
Both CertainTeed Ceilings and Gypsum products incorporate one of the highest concentrations of recycled content and are recyclable at the end of their life cycles. They also help building professionals qualify toward credits for both The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
