(Valley Forge, Pa.) – A former brown field site continues to evolve into a green operation, thanks to CertainTeed’s sustainable approach at its Buffalo, N.Y., vinyl manufacturing facility.
The 276,000 square foot facility, which produces CertainTeed’s popular vinyl fence, railing and deck products, opened in 2004 and was the first site in the state to be certified through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Brownfields Cleanup Program. The site, which sat vacant for nearly 20 years, was previously home to a steel coke oven.
Today, CertainTeed has made tremendous strides in reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
“The decision to locate our facility on a brown field site was really a launching pad to comprehensively evaluate the environmental impact of our operations,” said Dave Fink, Plant Manager at CertainTeed’s Buffalo facility. “Through this process, we have eliminated waste and maximized our use of natural resources, while continuing to provide quality, long-lasting exterior vinyl products.”
The facility utilizes 100 percent hydropower and incorporates a closed-loop water system that saves more than 372 million gallons of water per year. Through an extensive recycling program, materials, such as paper, plastic, oil, steel and lumber are recycled, rather than sent to landfills and incinerators as waste. Most recently, CertainTeed became a WasteWise partner through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, demonstrating the company’s commitment to reducing waste through the development of a waste reduction program tied to measurable results.
“We have broadened our perspective by focusing on the environmental impact of the entire life cycle of our products,” said Patti Pellock, Senior Marketing Manager for CertainTeed’s Fence, Railing and Deck Business. “Ultimately, we are conserving natural resources in our operations through the manufacturing of durable, long-lasting products that do not need to be replaced for decades.”
With a minimum 30-year product life, CertainTeed manufactures its popular Bufftech(R) and EverNew(R) fence, railing and deck products at the facility. The products are 99 percent recyclable, low maintenance and do not require chemical treatment or painting. CertainTeed fence, railing and deck products also help building professionals earn credits for both The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) through the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Association of Home Builders’ Green Building Program.
