Trex employee honored for safety

WINCHESTER, Va., Feb. 12, 2009 – Harrold (Jay) Black, environmental, health and safety manager at Trex® Company’s Fernley, NV, manufacturing plant, recently was honored as the 2008 KellerOnline® Safety Professional of the Year (SPOTY).

Black was chosen to receive the award from among more than 100 safety professionals in various trades – in part due to the hands-on approach he took to reinvigorate a strong commitment to safety within the Trex facility. The SPOTY award, now in its seventh year, is bestowed by J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., a Wisconsin-based consulting company that provides safety and compliance solutions to companies in multiple industries.

Since he applied for the SPOTY award, KellerOnline notes that Black reduced reportable injuries at the Fernley plant by more than 250 percent. He also is lauded for having completely rebuilt the facility’s safety culture to involve all levels of the organization.

“Jay possesses an intense passion for the safety of his co-workers, as well as an incredible drive to ensure that our workplace demonstrates year-over-year improvement in injury prevention,” said Steve Knight, plant manager. “We commend Jay for his insight, ideas and commitment.”

As a SPOTY award recipient, Black will be invited to participate in an awards ceremony at the J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. headquarters, during which he will be presented with a $2,500 cash award and a plaque recognizing his achievements.

“Trex’s corporate culture is built on respect for our employees – and safety is a primary concern in all of our facilities,” said Ron Kaplan, president and CEO of Trex. “We are extremely proud of Jay for setting an example by making safety a top priority every day. His leadership and dedication in this area are valuable, and we congratulate him on this recognition from a well-respected name in the safety industry.”
