October employment numbers

The October jobs report released today by the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics offers a mix of news about the employment conditions nationally. While the unemployment rate declined slightly from 9.1 to 9.0 percent in October, some sectors saw growth in the last month.

According to the report, long-term unemployment declined and the private sector "increased by 104,000." Professional and business services grew 562,000 jobs in the last 12 months. However, construction which grew 27,000 in September, declined by 20,000 in October. "Employment in both residential and nonresidential construction has shown little net change in 2011," said the report.

The national unemployment rate has hovered around 9 percent for most of 2011.
