Washington, D.C.-based HBI (Home Builders Institute) and the State of Florida are partnering to help re-employ veterans with training and job placement in the construction industry.
The HBI PACT for Veterans program—located throughout the state with sites in Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami—is open to all veterans who are residents of Florida. Veterans will have access to free training, certification and job placement in the state’s home building, remodeling and light commercial construction sectors.
With more than 20,000 employers in Florida, the state is the nation’s fourth largest market for home building. Construction employers report difficulty finding qualified workers at all levels of the industry, from entry-level and semi-skilled craft workers to managers and subcontractors. Currently, 12 of the 20 “hot jobs” in Florida are construction-industry related, according to the state’s Bureau of Labor Market Statistics.
Veterans who participate in the HBI program will receive training in all facets of general construction and facilities maintenance, including carpentry, electrical wiring, landscaping, masonry, painting, plumbing and weatherization.
Each participating veteran in the HBI program will receive:
- Screening and assessment to develop an individualized training plan
- Skills training
- Industry-sponsored and validated pre-apprenticeship certificate
- Job search and placement assistance and
- Free set of hand tools and personal protective equipment
HBI is also looking for construction industry employers in Florida to participate by re-employing veterans through this program (employers will receive a federal tax credit.) Business leaders can also participate by mentoring veterans entering the sector, donating funds or construction materials for training projects, serving on an advisory council or suggesting community-based volunteer construction projects for hands-on training opportunities.
The HBI PACT for Veterans program is sponsored by HBI, in partnership with Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity.
Veterans and construction industry employers can contact Paul Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (727) 460-7574 for information about how to participate.
