During the Southern Ideal Home Show, the first annual “Parade of Playhomes” took place. The event was organized by Mike Waite, executive director of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) in Charlotte, NC. A partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society allowed the “Girl of the Year” –the 9 year-old local girl who is the LLS’s face of their fundraising efforts for the year –to be the event’s celebrity judge.
As the celebrity judge, the girl was tasked with choosing her favorite of the playhomes, which was then gifted to her when she decided. The auctioning off of the remaining four homes raised proceeds for scholarships and wishes through Make a Wish.
Prize categories included: Children’s Choice; Imagination Award; Best Interior Design; Best Architectural Design; Master Craftsman Award; Contractor of the Year –Future Professionals; and the Jim Harkey Memorial Award. Waite says the event was successful and that the chapter will “grow the entire effort in years to come.”
